The Tin Church
Unique, romantic rural cottage with south-facing views towards the river Findhorn, the Tin Church is perfect all year round for couples who wish to find peace and relax.
The property is located on the historic Balnespick Estate, south of Inverness with lovely walks from the doorstep. The village of Tomatin (5 mins drive) has The Strathdearn, a delightful cafe and well-stocked shop, and sports facilities available to book.
There is generous parking next to the property, with immediate access to the front door. Bikes and fishing equipment can be stored in a lockable container. The property is heated using Air Source Heat Pump, with underfloor heating, and solar panels.
The body of the church serves as an open-plan living area, comprising a well-equipped kitchen and dining table, comfortable sofa/chairs, bookshelves, TV, and a Jotul wood-burning stove. There is additional space for two bedrooms, one en-suite, a study, a large bathroom and a hall with WC. All facilities are easily accessible.
History
The Tin Church is a copy of the old Tomatin Church that ceased to be used a few years ago. A fascinating and important part of local history, the original was chosen from a catalogue and built as a “flat-pack” in 1903 by the United Free Church to serve as a mission church for the distillery and railway workers of Tomatin. Sadly, the church had to be closed in 2016 because of the difficulties involved in bringing the church up to date. The search began for a new purpose for the building.
In the Tin Church, a copy of a portrait by de Laszlo, of Col George Mackintosh, grandfather to Robert, can be seen. He died in 1954. The Mackintosh family owned the 5,000 acre Balnespick estate until it was purchased by a family member towards the end of 1950’s. Farming in Cambridgeshire, Robert, the owner, has an interest in the estate and stays in the Tin Church with his wife and family when time allows.
